Back to reality

February 12, 2009

A slightly disappointing day for us – despite having what looked like 10 or more good follicles, it appears that many of them were empty, and we ended up with just 4 eggs. I’d not heard of empty follicles before, but it seems that it can be a side effect of the polycystic ovaries.

We will find out tomorrow whether any have fertilised, but it’s been a bit of a wakeup call that this is not necessarily going to be as easy as we thought. We had been hoping that I would produce a good number of embryos which could see us having to avoid another stim cycle, but with fertilisation rates through ICSI of 50-70%, we may be lucky to get 1 or two embryos to implant. Will find out tomorrow what the deal is.

If we only have a couple, I will talk to the FS about whether it’s worth freezing these and going through another stim cycle straight away, so that I get another crack at 33 year old eggs, rather than have to try in the future at 35 or 36, should we be lucky this time around.

WIll know more tomorrow – whether any fertilised, whether any have continued to grow.
