Yummy yummy yummy I’ve got love in my tummy

April 11, 2010

The Bee’s now 5 months – and while she’s adept at sticking a rusk in the general direction of her mouth to help with teething (it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye), she’s had less interest in the sticks of pear and sweet potato she’s been offered as part of the baby-led weaning we’re planning to do.

That’s OK – she’s still a few weeks off the recommended 6 months to start solids, and it’s meant to be a slow process anyway.  The key aspect of BLW is that you offer the baby full solids, rather than purees or mashes so they become more comfortable with food in its natural state. I’ve been following the success of Existere as she’s BLW her twins, and it seems to work really well for them, and I’m excited to see whether it will be the thing for us as well.

But when you see lovely homemade baby food like this from Honest Fare, it’s very tempting to whip out a spoon and have a go.  (I think that would be OK – but the baby needs to be the one with the spoon, and I know she’s nowhere near ready for that right now!)

We just had SOUP for the first time today! A rousing success. I think the thing is that people think ‘success’ means a baby immediately grasping how to eat food – and being able to bite, chew, and swallow. All of it takes time, as you seem to know!

It’s just fun fun fun as well. We do make some things (like mushed up mushrooms – ugh!) that we spread on toast. Or things like sweet potato mash – they both like feeding themselves with spoons.

Here’s hoping yours (and mine) don’t lose actual eyes anytime soon. Or, you know, ever.
