Victorian cycle costs for 2010

August 8, 2010

I received our info pack from the FS the other day, which included a fact sheet of the IVF treatment costs for this year. These have increased since we had Lady G since the Medicare rebate has been reduced substantially for IVF, but while they are still in the several thousand per cycle, I’m expecting that these may seem low for some of you overseas? I’m interested to know what you pay/paid per cycle.

IVF/GIFT $4,216 upfront ($2,656 out of pocket after rebate)
ICSI $4,734 upfront ($2,738 out of pocket after rebate)
FET $2,357 upfront ($1,134 out of pocket after rebate)

On top of that, there’s the cost of some drugs and a couple of day surgery stays, although those are covered by my health insurance. So, we’ll be looking at $3,500 or so for our next cycle, of which 20% can be claimed as a tax offset of amounts over $1,500 – so about $400. I’m going to talk to the FS about ‘prescribing’ acupuncture this time as well, so I can claim the cost of that against my taxes too.

Much cheaper than ours, especially with the exchange rate. We didn’t pay for our IVF – but I think a cycle is around 5,000 pounds, plus all the money for testing beforehand (two lots of testing for various problems). Our IVF treatment and meds were free (payed for by the couple who received my donor eggs), though we paid for most of the testing (had some done on the NHS), including a full chromosomnal analysis required by law for egg/sperm donors. We also paid for the sperm and the ICSI.

I think in total it was ballpark 1500 pounds (so imagine a further 5000 on top of this!). This was actually cheaper than it would have been to do IUI, believe it or not. And IUI offered a 23% success rate over three cycles, while I was told I had a 55% chance of success with one cycle of IVF.

And, well, you know the rest.

Oh yeah – forgot the cost of the Fertility Specialist and ultrasounds etc – which added up to another grand or so. Still it sounds like we have a sweet deal given the costs you have in the UK. We also don’t have to deal with Katie Price, but that’s another story.

Well, I’m in Canada and it varies from province to province, but here in Ontario we paid $6000 for one cycle of IVF, plus $1500 for ICSI. FET, however, is only $1200. None of it is covered or subject to rebate – except for residents of Quebec, where the government just began paying for it this year.

is that a secret plot by the French-speakers to take over Canada?

Ha! Well, it’s not really a secret.

Seriously though, Quebec is way ahead of the rest of Canada when it comes to most social issues.
