Cold light of day

February 15, 2011

Up one day, down the next.  My nurse called this morning to tell us that only 8 of the 10 eggs collected yesterday were mature enough to be ICSI-ed, and of those, only 3 had fertilised.  So unless there’s a little movement in the stragglers, we will be fast tracked to a day 3 transfer on Thursday rather than the day 5 blastocyst we had planned. Pooz.

This is obviously a blow to an old woman – a 30% fert rate is pretty low and it’s hard not to feel like I’m to blame somehow.  Perhaps it’s a sign that my egg quality (excellent 2 years ago) has dropped significantly, or maybe I could have done something different diet or supplement-wise?

More than likely it’s just the luck of the draw and it’s all a matter of statistics, but hard not to feel a little low.  I know all we need is one strong one (and we know we can do that), but I would have liked the luxury of a little more time and a few backups.  Should know for sure what’s going on tomorrow.
